Discounting medicine

An approved pharmacy may discount PBS medicine that does not attract a government subsidy.  For this PBS medicine, the amount to be recorded on the prescription record form is either the maximum recordable value for the Safety Net, or the amount paid by the customer - whichever is the lowest.

If a pharmacy wishes to discount a medicine that normally attracts a government subsidy, the supply must occur as non-PBS (private).

Type of supply Can it be discounted? Amount for Safety Net
PBS prescription that does not attract a government subsidy Yes

If discounted:
Safety Net amount, or the amount paid by the patient - whichever is lowest

If not discounted:

Safety Net amount as shown in the Schedule
PBS prescription that attracts a government subsidy No Maximum recordable value for Safety Net
PBS prescription that normally attracts a government subsidy, but is supplied as a non-PBS (private) prescription Yes $0.00 - must not count towards Safety Net
Non-PBS (private) prescription Yes $0.00 - must not count towards Safety Net
