The PBS and You

As a prescriber, there are some essential things you should know about the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

The PBS ensures all Australian residents and eligible overseas visitors have access to affordable and necessary medicine. It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of, and comply with, the rules and regulations which apply to the PBS. Prescribing according to the PBS rules and regulations helps keep access to PBS medicine fair and equitable for everyone.

The PBS and You resource (opens in new window) is designed to help you aquire the key skills and knowledge to use the PBS correctly, whether you are working in private practice or in a PBS approved public hospital. If you are working in a public hospital and are unsure whether it is PBS approved, you will need to check with your hospital administrator. If your hospital is not PBS approved, you may still find some of this information in the PBS and You resource relevant to you.

There are 33 PBS topics. These will be useful to you in your first few months of practice. You can also continue to use this resource to update or refresh your knowledge about the PBS.

Please note, this information is updated annually.
