Some items listed under the PBS may only be prescribed for a specific purpose or indication. The prescriber is legally obliged to ensure items are appropriately prescribed.
Where the patient’s clinical condition does not match the restriction a non-PBS prescription can be written using a PBS prescription form. However, you must:
- cross out the PBS/RPBS boxes
- write “Non-PBS” on the prescription
- tear up duplicates.
This also applies when prescribing a medicine that is not listed on the PBS.
Medicare Australia has developed a range of resources including a basic guide to writing a PBS prescription, non-PBS prescription notes and prescription shopping program information sheet. These are all included in your package.
