Using a speech reader with Portable Document Files (PDF’s)
Medicare Australia provides a lot of information in Portable Document Format (PDF). The file name of a PDF always ends with .pdf and captures formatting information from a variety of desktop publishing applications. This makes it possible to send formatted documents and have them appear on the user’s monitor or printer as they were intended. To view a file in PDF format, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader.
There is an Accessibility Resource Centre
on the Adobe website which provides a number of tools that can help people who use speech readers to read the content of PDF documents. These tools work by converting PDF documents to text, making them readable by speech readers. These tools are free and most require no downloading of files.
To find out more about these tools go to access.adobe.com
